Holy Thursday

Holy Thursday and the celebration of the Last Supper

Today we pause on Jesus’ journey towards Calvary and allow ourselves to be nourished by the comfort of a loving and supportive community, gathered around the homely image of a humble table. For we who come from a Marist tradition, the image of the La Valla table captures the simplicity and loving presence of Jesus to his closest friends at a time when each needed the care and support of the other.

Holy Thursday invites us to join Jesus in quiet prayer in the Garden, aware of the burdens and difficulties that life presents us, but also to be supported and comforted by the loving and healing presence of God. Facing Good Friday and the drama of the cross, Holy Thursday offers us a moment of respite and nourishment to help us negotiate the difficult terrain of life’s journey.

Nurturing God,
Who sustains and holds us
And gathers us as one community
Around your nourishing table
We hold in our hearts today
Those who are troubled and facing persecution
Seeking Your promise of healing and peace.
As we share your simple gifts
Of food and drink
At the table prepared for us.
May your love and compassion
Be shared with
Our world that is wounded
Our time that is uncertain.
Help us to bring comfort and hope
To those most in need
Through our sharing
Of the gifts of life and joy
That we receive n this most Holy of Days
Amen
