Entering Years 11 and 12 is an important milestone for students. The final years of your child’s secondary education are intended to prepare students for further tertiary studies and/or employment opportunities. These years are the platform from which students prepare for their future success in their chosen fields.

At Assumption College, students are supported and guided in tailoring a personalised senior school experience and reflects their personal interests, qualities and aspirations, while also being equipped with the skills necessary for success beyond Assumption College.

Senior Student Learning Outcomes

Senior students may choose from a range of pathways and certification options, or a combination of these, in pursuit of their individual goals. Our approach recognises that there is no single pathway to success, and that students thrive when learning aligns with their future aspirations.

1. Victoria Certificate of Education (VCE)

The Victorian Certificate of Education is typically a two year program of study undertaken during the final years of secondary education. It is a recognised qualification for entry to university, TAFE, or the workforce.

The VCE pathway supports students seeking a strong academic foundation, with a broad selection of subjects and opportunities to pursue tertiary study.

2. VCE Vocational Major (VCE VM)

The VCE Vocational Major is an applied learning program that offers choice and flexibility, allowing students to tailor their program to their strengths and vocational interests.

Students complete studies in Literacy, Numeracy, Work Related Skills, Personal Development Skills, and a Vocational Education and Training certificate. The VCE Vocational Major requires a minimum of two years of study and is designed to support practical learning and real world application.

3. Victorian Pathways Certificate (VPC)

The Victorian Pathways Certificate is designed to support students transitioning to the VCE, entry level VET, or employment.

This foundation level certificate assists students to develop essential skills and confidence before progressing to further study or the workforce. The VPC is not equivalent to the VCE, and is completed over two years of study.

4. Vocational Education and Training (VET)

Vocational Education and Training subjects can be combined with either VCE or VCE VM pathways. Students completing a VCE VM pathway are required to undertake VET studies.

VET subjects provide nationally recognised qualifications that support employment outcomes and further study. Many VET subjects also contribute credits toward the calculation of the Australian Tertiary Admissions Rank ATAR, offering flexibility for future pathways.

5. School Based Apprenticeship Training (SBAT)

School Based Apprenticeship Training allows students to commence an apprenticeship while completing their Senior School studies.

SBATs incorporate vocational training and paid employment alongside completion of a senior secondary certificate, with credits contributing toward VCE or VCE VM. Students commit to at least one day of paid work per week and complete theory modules alongside their school program.

Students considering an SBAT are supported to balance work commitments with their learning program, with the option to transition into a full time apprenticeship after school.

Accelerated Learning Options

Senior students may undertake accelerated VCE studies or complete university subjects during Year 12, both of which contribute to ATAR calculations.

University acceleration studies allow students to complete units through selected Melbourne universities. These studies can provide VCE credit, contribute to ATAR scoring, and may also count toward future university qualifications.

Pathways Involving Vocations or Training (PIVOT)

Assumption College supports personalised learning through the Pathways Involving Vocations or Training program, known as PIVOT.

This program offers short nationally recognised courses focused on employability skills, supporting students seeking practical pathways into employment or further training. Entry into PIVOT occurs through consultation with the Pathways team and Senior School leaders to ensure the pathway aligns with each student’s needs and goals.

Ongoing Guidance and Support

Senior students and families are supported in decision making at every stage of their Assumption College journey.

For advice, planning, or pathway guidance, families are encouraged to connect with their child’s Learning Mentor or the qualified Pathways Team, ensuring informed and confident choices throughout Senior School.
