Feast of Saint Mary MacKillop

The Feast of St Mary MacKillop: Australia’s First Saint, 8 August 2021

From Mary’s often troubled and humble beginnings in Melbourne to the establishment of a school in a stable in Penola, her early life showed her great desire to do God’s will and help those in need. The desire Mary had for the religious life, combined with her response to the poor bush children of Penola, resulted in her founding a new form of religious life. Mary’s trust in God’s will and providence enabled her to face the challenges that came both from within the Catholic Church and those endured through the loss of family and dear friends.

As the Sisters of St Joseph expanded throughout Australia and beyond, Mary’s faith, coupled with her compassionate service of the poor and socially responsible leadership, touched many people’s lives, leaving a legacy that endure to today.

Mary’s motto in life was: “Never see a need in life without doing something about it”

Some of her thoughts that we could underpin reflect on today are:

“We teach more by example than by words”

and

“Do all you can with the means at your disposal and calmly leave the rest to God.”

God,

Washer of feet

Through the example of your servant Mary Mackillop,

You reveal to us a model of service and social responsibility.

Increase our faith.

May we imitate your Son, Jesus Christ,

And be prepared to humble ourselves

Through selfless service of our sisters and brothers in their need.

We make this prayer through Christ our Lord.

Amen
